    Rent refund - filling out tax return

    I started work in September (i.e. midway through the tax year). So on the field where I have to insert the amount of rent I paid to the landlord, do I insert the amount I paid for the whole tax year (April 2014 to March 2015), or just the amount I paid during the time I was an employee?

    That allowance is tied with employment - you have to give copies of receipts/lease to your employer, plus the IRD will know your employment dates.

    Yep. Done all that. So I assume just the amount I paid to the landlord during the time I was an employee.

    For rent refund, there are 2 tax treatments: (1) employer provide you the resident (so reimburse the rental fee (maybe partial); or (2) employer give you rental refund as "cash allowance".

    For (1) you report the amount you paid (and there are rental value, which is 10% on your employment income);
    For (2) the rental refund by employer is your income under employment, and you are no required to report about the rental.
