Do I have to pay taxes?

    Hello!
I'm new to the job industry and I was wondering if having a part time summer job would require me to pay taxes? If so, how much and how will it be done?
    Sorry for the stupid question
    Thanks!

The answer to your question is probably no.

But it may be more complex than that. You may have to file a tax return - which is very unlikely to result in any taxes unless you had really well paid summer job.

Your best bet is to look at the tax information on the government website and see what they say.

It's unlikely you'll have to pay tax as the personal allowance for the tax year 2016/17 is $132,000. So you would have to earn that much before you pay any tax. However, you might have to complete a tax return.

Depending on how much you make and how long you work, you may need to contribute some funds towards MPF.

You're welcome. And it's not a stupid question. It's sensible to find these things out beforehand.

It depends how much you earn. So if you have other work later in the year, you may have some taxes owed. First $132k is tax free anyway.

    I agree with guys opinions.
Are you Hong Kong tax resident ?
How long will you stay if not ?
Of course there're basic allowance / reliefs and other tax deductions for you. For more information, i suggest you can learn more from hong kong tax bureau website.
