    Getting Married/Tax Filing Question

Hello I will be getting married int he second half of this year, but my tax filing is due now. Does anyone know
    1. If you can amend your tax filing after you get married, to either file joint or change martial status
    2. Or can we file separately this year and amend our individual filings to get the standard married deduction
    3. If you can recommend a tax consultant to discuss this

    TIA

    Marta

You cant claim the married persons allowance unless you were married in the financial year for which you are claiming the deduction.

You're not married on the date your tax is filed. You have to file individually.

When you get married you can sort your next return out in 2020.

There is a calculator on the IRD website which will allow you to figure out if it's best to file jointly or not.

Your tax filing now is for the year April 2018 to March 2019, so no you cannot claim married persons allowance for this time. You also have to pay provisional tax for April 2019 to March 2020 now as well, and whatever they tell you to pay you should pay now, and then will be adjusted at your next filing next year.
