why write a book for British people when you live in Hong Kong? I think in one of the many other times this book has been mentioned he did say what the book was about

it's a book about the right to remain silent in the UK, and how to exercise that right.

what if the books sell well, and I were to print them out.

Let's say I print them somewhere in London, and then send the printed books via post to its customers, mostly in the UK but a few across the channel in the continent.

Do I need to pay VAT or income tax?

    thanks
You pay VAT to suppliers, and, if liable, charge it to customers. Since you have no suppliers and as noted books are VAT-free then you don't need to bother with VAT. In you did then you would need a UK business and a VAT registration and a heap of paperwork.

Income tax is, in general, based on the territorial principle of where you did the work - it's nothing to do with where your customers are. You would not be liable to UK tax. However, if you are liable to HK tax on employment then you should, in principle, declare the income here and pay tax if you earn more than the tax-free allowances.
