    Tailor for Women

    Hi all

any recommendations for a tailor - anywhere in HK

looking for a reasonably priced one so nothing high-end, e.g. not the one in the mandarin or ifc (ascot chang?).

    thanks!

Proper tailoring is very labour intensive and thus won't be cheap. Being a tailor myself, I condider chear tailoring to be an oxymoron.
That said, I can highly recommend Margaret Court Tailoress in Lan Kwai Fong

I have asked 3-4 tailors this question over the years. Anything from midrange tailors to fairly pricey ones. They have all said that womens' clothing is too much work (and one went further to say that it was too much work because women are so much pickier than men )

The problem is that few people realise that tailoring for men is fundamentally different than tailoring for women. It starts with pattern making and continues with a very different approach to how the clothes are put together. Women's clothes are sewn using very different interfacings, notions as well as workmanship. It's best done by a tailor specialised in it. I was trained in Germany where tailoring for ladies and men are two different professions.

Women are not picky, our bodies are different to men, therefore, a pair of trousers cut and sewn in a ladies size but for a male shape, it isn't going to fit. Women are not picky, it's the tailor that isn't skilled enough. I've had a "tailor" in Shenzhen blame the out coming shape on the fabric. I sew a lot, and I could tell that the waistline was not even cut straight, let alone sewn straight.

    thanks guys...

    will check out margaret court.

i don't think we're that picky...when it comes to tailored clothing, men sure don't hold back with their suggestions to the tailor!

i am also debating buying off the rack (good quality off the rack) from the UK/US and then getting it reduced in size...anyone know a good seamstress/tailor for this task?

I would not recommend this approach because:

    1. How can you judge the quality of a garment you can't physically touch and can only see as a picture online?
    2. How can you judge the fitting of a garment you can't try on?
    3. You can only alter the garment about 1 Size (4-6cm) without affecting the general fit and balance of it.
    4. Some fitting problems can't be improved by altering a garment (wrong bust point, problems at the neck line, poor fitting of sleeves, etc.)
    5. How can you judge whether the garment you buy can be altered in order to fit you? While shortening or taking in is done easily, major fitting problems might not be possible to be improved.

OP, you are much better off locating good quality fabric that you have felt with your own fingers and seen with you own eyes and have it made into a style that sits you and is fitted as such. Clothes made in huge US/UK are not always with great quality fabric. I've seen textiles used in Zara, Cos , M&S , and other well known chains here being sold in Shenzhen, shanghai, sham shui Po. Even Banana republic doesn't use the quality as in previous years.
