    Tipping

Do you tip if it's just an average restaurant? (I understand for fine dining it's rather a different story)

Friends told me that I don't have to as there's service charges attached to the bill, but still I'm a little unsure about this.

Is it really okay to just walk away without paying any?

Most Tips in hong kong goes to the operators and not the service staff. Even for fancy restaurants.

I only tip when I've received exceptional service. Sinice that's an alien concept in HK, I've never had to do so yet.

This topic has been asked many times before, but this particular thread http://hongkong.geoexpat.com/forum/211/thread28266.html was the most comprehensive.

Why do you feel you have to apply US values to a HK restaurant? You do realise that many countries of the world do not tip, right? Some don't even have separate service charges (like Australia, NZ for example). Some countries believe that putting the food on the table is part of the whole restaurant experience that you pay for in the bill.

I'll tip for good service, although from many restaurants I've tried I don't feel they even deserve to impose a service charge.

My tip back to you: Never apply bland humor online for attention-whoring.
