I honestly haven't tried the coffee at McCafe, so I can't rate it against Starbucks coffee, but I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't a huge difference taste-wise.

My wife and I did try some of the slices of cakes sold at McCafe once, though. Absolutely no flavor. Not comparatively little flavor. Just none. Zilch. Zero. They (we tried slices of a couple of different types of cake) were even more tasteless than the "pineapple buns" sold in local bakeries.

We have Sbux a couple of times a week in the mornings and usually get something like lemon tarts at the same time. HK Sbux is now being run 100% by Maxims (who gave US Sbux the Maxims share of all of the Starbucks locations on the Mainland in exchange) and everything about HK Sbux, already mediocre, is slowly being degraded (the croque-monsieur is sold by the half-sandwich now, the ingredients of the wraps are getting stranger and stranger -- e.g. stuff like avocado + whole kernel corn + thick-sliced deli ham, etc.) until it's as crappified as any other international brand that enters HK.

I like the Starbucks in IFC. Although I'm not a huge coffee fan, the the display of food at this Starbucks location seems pretty nice. Compared to what I've seen in my home city of Vancouver, the food at Starbucks is much fresher in HK. I've seen lettuce turning brown in a sandwiches of stale bread.

Marketing, ambience, and because there's not always a McCafe around.

FYI - I did see the cakes getting loaded into the cabinet at McCafe once. The boxes said they came from a "bakery" in Queensland somewhere.

Off topic, but if you want to try some really good locally made cakes, try Ginger Bakery in Wanchai on Johnston Road (close to The Pawn). Their Banana Cream tart is to die for.

Agreed, the cakes at McCafe are (in my limited experience) not very good..
Also, I'd rather sit in a Starbucks store (preferably drinking outside bought coffee) than in a McCafe (not a fan of the McDonalds aroma....)
