    A diamond is not only a piece of jewellery, it's also an investment. You can sell it again later if you need the money. Not much you can do with food and wine once eaten! Shit does not have that much value

    True, point taken. There really isn't a worse way to piss away money than on food

    Though diamonds as an investment?? That is a stretch. There is no natural shortage of diamonds. They make poor investments due to their lack of fungibility as well.

    But like you said, at least you have something you could sell back at some point if you had to.

    There's been a classic test where people have been hooked up to EEGs and given glasses of wine. Basically they had higher brain waves indicating pleasure whenever they were told the wine was expensive, and lower if given the same wine and told it was cheap.

    So yes, $70k bottle will be more pleasurable than $20k. Particularly if you're given it for free an have electrodes stuck in your head.
