A friend would deep fry a turkey in his backyard now and then. Damn tasty bird. The recipe I'm eyeing for Xmas is Turkey confit. The duck fat will probably cost 3x more than the turkey.

OMG! This looks so unhealthy! Am sticking to a Roast Turkey with simple healthy stuffings and LOTS of DESSERT!

Is this one of the few Americanisms that hasn’t spread around the Western world? That’s not an anti US bash because I know for many it’s bigger than Christmas and I get that. Hull is it big in the Philippines for example outside of expats?

No I was surprised to find that it is not celebrated here. But given Christmas starts on September 1st .....

The centerpiece dish of this holiday meal is the turkey - a bird native to the Americas - and it doesn't seem to have taken in the rest of the world. One exception is Laos. When I first visiting 20+ years ago I took the local bus from Luang Prabang to Vang Vien to Vientiane, I saw what I thought were wild turkeys running around. I doubted myself but I later read the Laotians really took to the fluffy white turkey meat after American brought it to the region during the Vietnam war and they still eat it today.

Many other aspects of the day don't translate - i.e. sitting around watching (American) football games, gluttony (also American-style), etc.

Perhaps these are some reasons why the holiday hasn't taken off else where.
