You people really ought to buy a map and learn how to use it! And also how to use the bus planning sites. Getting a taxi from Sai Kung to Wong Shek when there are very regular buses (particularly at weekends) is a silly way to burn well over $100. If you get off the bus at Pak Tam Au instead of going to Wong Shek and then walking (downhill, 25-30 mins max) you'll almost certainly be at Chek Kung no later than you would be by staying on to Wong Shek and then haggling for a boat and so on. And you've saved the boat fee.

It seems like this is a lost art.

Indeed - I was hiking today with someone who had tried to walk from Wu Kau Tang to Lai Chi Wo based entirely on some waffly description and a very basic sketch map in some guidebook about "Serious Hiking" or something. And failed miserably. Getting a map seemed to be something she hadn't really considered, despite being of the generation where you would think that was natural.

Tsk tsk! She obviously hadn't read the introduction.
