Yes - I wouldn't say it's automatic. I said you can apply for a 3 year visa here, not that it will necessarily be granted: I've heard of PRs getting 3 years straight away and others only being given 1 year despite having had several previous visas. It may also be that being (or not) an actual HK resident (rather than simply a HK PID holder) makes a difference, as may the passport that you hold. But that's just guesswork on my part.

If you pay extra for Rush Service, then you can get it in 24 hours. I think the main problem is that your last Chinese visa is from so long ago, but you can try.

See Visa Office in Wanchai for prices.

If I were to use an agent in Hong Kong, I would use a specialised visa agent rather than CTS.

If you apply in the US, you can probably get a 12 month multi visa without a problem. Use an agent such as mychinavisa.com

In light of your responses, let me add that my need is more immediate. I have a place to stay in HK for two weeks and would like to take several one-day trips to Shenzen while I am there. If I can get the visa in the US, then I don't have to wait 4 days in HK for the visa to come through.

My concern is that if I apply in the US, I may only get a single-entry or double-entry visa since I don't have a previous 6 month visa. My understanding is that I am more likely to get a multi-entry visa if I apply in HK. Any thoughts?

I thought US passport holders when applying in the US usually got a 12 month multi entry irrespective of whether they had a Chinese visa before. Contact a visa agent and ask them for yourself.

Also, you can get a visa in 24 hours in Hong Kong.

Last time I applied for a China multiple entry visa, they would only give me 6 months even though I have PR, live in HK and had previous China visas. There are no guarantees as to what you'll get, you're at the mercy of the visa officer. If you pay extra, you can get the visa in 24 hours. The fees are detailed on their webpage...

Beware that the visa office is extremely busy at the moment and you'll likely wait for hours, even in the best of time, you're likely to have a long wait. Those in a a hurry show up at least an hour before opening times. If you pay more with agents, there are no waiting hassles.

as to the usefulness of previous China visa for a new application,
I think previous 1 or 3 months visas won't help much facilitating your application for 1 year ( or more than that ).
But if you already have had a long term China visa before then your chances
of getting a 1-3 years are very good.
At least that's how an agent explained this subject to me.
But all this is solely at the discretion of CITS.

May be it's just me but I feel the staff at CITS is very nice...

Thanks to everyone who responded to my original inquiry.

I decided to apply for my Chinese visa here in the US. I used "China Visa Service Center" (Chicago Office) (China Visa Service Center) and they did a good job. It took 8 days (including weekend days) from when I sent them my application to when I received it using their regular service (not express or rush) and using FedEx Overnight. Their customer service was responsive and they reviewed my application to ensure everything was in order.

I received the visa that I applied for -- twelve month, multiple entry, tourist visa.

For anyone in the States who needs a Chinese visa, I would recommend that they use China Visa Service Center.
