OP stated from Kowloon. So just $30 for bridge toll. If journey time is important then not that much more than MTR especially if OP has to take a cab to an MTR station late at night.

You missed the cost of buying and running the car in the first place.

ummm the airport toll for the return journey from the airport is $30.00 not $35.00.. Also I parked at the Alda's car park a few days ago, which is situated next to Sunny Bay MTR/ Dbay Bus terminal, and the hourly rate is $6.00 per hour, for hourly parking, or $35 max day rate.

If one was spending the day at Dbay, using our Prius for this exercise, which is the most economical car you can operate in the HKSAR, it works out to roughly 2.5 litres of fuel from Gold Coast to Sunny Bay and back.

Let's look at the numbers: $14.36 per litre of fuel = $35.90
Parking = $35.00 for parking for the day out.
Toll fee for the return journey = $30.00

    Sub total = $100.90/3 passengers

Average cost per passenger = $16.82 each way.
Journey time each way = 20 minutes
Fuel used per passenger = 41.67 ml ea way
CO2 per passenger for the return journey = 29.666 grams km

Also the argument about the purchase cost of the car, can work out in your favour, if you manage to purchase the car at much cheaper than the market rate, allowing you to make a profit, or at the very least, break even when on sold 24 months later. When the HKTD installs the HK Island congestion tariff, ( near future ) which hybrids will be exempt from paying, I expect to be in a very fortunate position.. .

Also factor in, that if you own your own property, mortgage free, own your parking space, are not paying management fee's ( own a house etc).... car ownership shouldnt be an eyebrow raising cost, considering some of you spend monthly outgoing costs, be it rent, management fees or in Movings case, mooring costs. Factor factor in the cost of a depreciating debenture, to have access to the Gold Coast Yacht Club facilities, which costs how much ? $175,000HKD, just so you can access the mooring ? Lets ignore the debenture for a moment...

Mooring costs alone are $8,000 per month $96,000 per year. Which is already more than our entire Prius's ( used ) purchase price inc its fuel for a whole year, insurance, road tax and its one dinky $490.00HKD fluids/filter change per year. In fact I still have change, inc 2 years worth of fuel, insurance and road tax costs .

A car doesn't have to be a financially daunting prospect...

How exactly do you do this?

By purchasing direct off the ( O ) owner, before the car dealer trades the car in, new car salesmen hate trade ins on new cars, because they have to wait for their commission, until the trade in is sold, ie finalising the sale ... The quicker they get rid of the trade, the quicker they get paid, and if you offer a little kick back incentive, it all helps, to motivate....

As the latest GEN III Prius was launched not too long ago, quite a few of the GEN II's were being traded in, when we got ours.

If you look after the sales people, they'll look after you, as they want a smooth sale, if you offer a little more than the trade in via the new car buyer, you'll be ( on average ) 30% better off than market ( used ) dealer rate...

    Also btw..
Before the pedants jump in lol My fuel consumption per passenger should have read 0.42 ( rounded ) litres. Soz for the typo.
