It is a lot based on fear and America after 911 became like a fear biting dog. Fahrenheit 911 and Michael Moore did a good job of showing how the US Bush government used there watch signals to keep folks in tiny towns of America in fear.

There is a need for airport security the question is what is most effective to protect people and plane safety. I would like to see some independent honest assessment of what is needed to protect flyers and planes. I sure don't know.

The irony with Beck is it was that lot who used to promote the Bush government who started all this stuff.

Quite. There seems to be an unfortunate amount of PCness when a 95-year-old great grandfather flying for the first time is considered as likely as possible terrorist as an unemployed male who has travelled before but only to Yemen, Syria and Pakistan.
