It will be very busy crossing the border on the day before the first day, and also on the final day as people return to Hong Kong.

I don't think room prices will change that much- but check the site above and also elong.net

Perhaps some of the shops will close on the first and second day - something to consider if you intend to go shopping.

This is a great time to visit Shenzhen, apart from the border crossing traffic. Lok Ma Chau is the best peak-season checkpoint and before 9am is really good if you can manage it. Shenzhen Bay (Shenzhen Wan) is the next best. Lowu checkpoint is the worst and should be avoided at all costs.

Actually the hotels have special rates as lots of people go to their home towns all over China so Shenzhen is not busy. Check on the internet for good rates.

Terrific things to see : the New Year flower markets. These are at lots of major centres eg if you are staying in Futian then there is a flower market near the Central Walkway mall. (They are just outdoor street markets with lovely displays and lots of action.)

The parks are fantastic eg Lian Hua Shan, again in Futian.

Shopping - even Lowu closes the first two or three days of New Year although the restaurants there stay open so this festive season is not much good for shopping.

However everything else is great - fireworks, special prices, and everyone is in a good mood.

If you pick up a copy of the Map of Shenzhen (Unique Guide) from Dymocks bookstores in HK this will give you plenty of ideas on where to go. It is a colourful, fun map and shows all the parks and shopping malls etc. not to mention the metro which is just like the HK MTR - cheap, clean and safe.

If you are figuring out where to stay, Futian or Overseas Chinese Town are pleasant, leafy areas. Lowu is a bit seedy but has some great parks, depending on if you enjoy walking.

    Any more info, just ask.
