If you give yourself an hour to get to HKIA, give yourself double to get to Shenzhen airport - especially the first time. I use it a lot, but if travelling with a family, maybe I would pay extra for the convenience of travelling from HKIA.

Besides ctrip, also look on elong and travelzen. qunar is good, if you can read Chinese, and if you are in the Mainland so you can book and pay for the cheaper fares. But, internal airfares seem quite high this year in China. Consider flying to Tianjin and then getting the fast train to Beijing if the fare is very different.

If you take the MTR to Shenzhen, then transfer from the HK MTR to the SZ MTR to the airport, thats cheaper but more time consuming.

You can take a cross border coach from HK to SZ Air. Or Hydrofoil from HKIA to SZX.

True - now the Shenzhen subway is connected to Shenzhen Airport. But a long journey (30+ stops?). Also, you are crossing the border at Lo Wu if you want to get on the LuoBao line without changing.

The cross border buses are ok, but take longer than the 75 minutes advertised. Also, they cost HK$110 one way now (although if you buy through a travel agent you can get cheaper).

Ferries - how frequent is the schedule to Shenzhen Fu Yong? Does it still run to Kowloon or HK island?

The cross border buses are the way to go. Or take the 3B bus from tuen mun (on the rail line) to shenzhen bay port crossing and catch a cab the other side. Only cost us 90rmb in a cab last year and took about 40mins.
Immigration is irrelevant - you save much more than this by not clearing in beijing. Shenzhen bay port crossing is empty. No queues. Only idiots incabable of figuring out the buses would go via lu wo.

Agree with all the points, except the price&time
I did the above just 4 days ago, on Thursday.
Barring any traffic, the price is 75rmb and its about 25-30 mins to get there.

I suspect my price/time is consistent with your price/time. We were in a busy period and there was traffic. So, still not bad considering traffic.

Instead of going to ShenZhen to go to Beijing, has anyone tried to take the train from HK to BJ?

there is a shuttle single decker full size bus (minibus) from Tin Shui Wai to the border GMB618
Be careful not to book an early flight as the border doesn't open until 6:30AM
