It is also typhoon season in both those places. In fact there is one heading to Guam at the moment I think.

i see.. however during typhoon season in manila, aren't flights disrupted? that is if the op has to go out of the city proper ie manila. in guam, at least you're already there without need to get connecting flights to get to the beach

Doh, can't edit the post, so here it is:

    3. Tsing Ching Baiyun (白雲渡假山莊) - family run, nice, comfy and reasonable

(The correct spelling in Hanyu Pinyin is Cingjing, but sometimes it's spelled Tsing Ching, Chingjing or Qingjing)

Hotels are cheap as chips or find a nice resort to stay and lay around the pool, drinks are very cheap and you drink so much that you would need a kidney/liver transplant by the time you get back
Loads of great ideas, thanks to everyone, has given me loads of ideas to look into.

wtbhotia I just had to laugh at your idea (totally no offense intended, you'd laugh too if you knew me), it's probably the total antithesis of me on holiday. I like a nice relaxing beach now & again, but I'm a touch of the eco-liberal-naturalist, so shooting guns, golf ranges and casinos are places you'd more likely find me protesting and raging about. I can't stress enough though, no offense by me laughing, it's a web forum, I didn't specify and so you had no way of knowing, it just made me chuckle.

For an eco-liberal-naturalist, you can't beat Tiger Leaping Gorge. Fabulous, threatened by a hydro dam (locals there are all protesting) - easy 2 hour bus or taxi from Lijiang. If you want to hike the gorge, allow 2 days for a strong hiker and 3 if not.

Mentions of Clark, and I'm there each month working but usually staying closer to town. No beach but, wow, do you get space and some great hotels. Only problem is immigration which makes China immigration look something like professional.

Really? Is there an APEC line at Clark? I use the APEC line at NAIA and I'm through in 2 minutes.

If you do end up at middle TLG, dont worry too much about the rickety stairs :-) I'm around 120KG and they wobbled a bit but they carried me just fine *smile*

If you want a complete getaway (no cell phone signal), I would say go with Songpan.
If you want to keep a little bit of technology around, then Lijiang and TigerLeaping would be lovely too.
Visited both this summer and I would go back to both at a heartbeat.
