Isn't this just the usual case where US passport holders pay the same for any China visa, be it 5-day, single entry, double entry, 6 month, 12 month, 24 month or 36 month? So it's expensive for short visas and cheap for long ones - at least compared with, say, UK passports...

yes, but uk passport holders have to pay HK$2300 for a year/3 year multi now ( was 1300 in may 2011), though cheaper for single/double visa

probably reflects uk relations with china

Interesting that US passport holders can now get a 5 day Shenzhen visa. Previously, they were one of the nationalities who could not.

It's interesting, to me the term "reciprocal arrangements" ususlly implies some kind of arrangement between two parties for the benefit of both parties. In China's case, its a punishment list

It's also interesting Japanese get totally visa free access to Shenzhen, considering China-Japan strained relations.

Not only to Shenzhen - Japanese, as well as Singaporean and Brunei passport holders get 15 days visa free for the whole of China (although probably not Tibet).

But that is all strange, Chinese passport holders require a visa to get into to Japan and Brunei though (or is my interweb information incorrect on this point?)

Anyone any idea how the current situation is at Shekou Port Terminal border for 5-day Shenzhen visa? I am holding European passport and Hong Kong ID (NOT a permanent resident though)
