Need help deciding on where to go for 2 week holiday in August...

Hi guys
I have looked up lots on the internet but still can't decide where is a good destination for 2 week hol with the hubby in August. Ideally we would like to spend about 4 days in a city or sightseeing and then a week to ten days in a beach area. We're looking for somewhere that has beautiful beach but also nightlife and shops...nothing crazy, but more life than is to be found on some beautiful isolated island...tall order! Good quality restaurants more important than bars...to give idea of what we're trying to avoid, we've been to Railay Beach and this is not our scene at all...too much Bob Marley going on!!

Any advice muchly appreciated!

Bangkok+Huahin if you like it a bit quiet.
Bangkok+Pattaya if you like it noisy.

with 2 weeks and no kids, you pretty much have the whole world as possibilities....

you could do:
australia
new zealand (although both would be winter, not summer)
south africa (same as above)
UK
italy
greece
france
etc...

you give no idea of price, continent, distance etc that you are willing to travel....

Cairns in Australia. It has the city life and within 30 mins you can be at a great beaches, the great barrier reef, rain Forrest. It has many fine dining restaurants, shopping , casino and night markets

I heard Greece will be very cheap during that period. Seriously, the Greek Isles for two weeks, and you get to help out a country in need of foreign capital.

last place i'll go right now is greece. most public utilities are on a discounted service. public transport is a joke. its only a matter of time when the airport is partially closed. half the population will go on strike.

I like the Thailand idea. I also heard good things about Malaysia recently.

Oh and I saw v cheap flights to manila, philipines... on a related subject, does anyone know, are there any nice beaches in the vicinity of manila, or is it necessary (as I heard) to get an internal flight once in the philipines?
