I dont like Dongfang simply because there isnt much there aside from the park. Its an older tired hotel with reasonable rates. Next door, Mariott offers newer and nicer rooms but my preference would be toward the middle of the town.

BaiYun, Garden Hotel both offer reasonable rates if you go outside of fair season. In that same area, I like my Paco hotel...

Well, we're going there mostly for the park. We're not good city tourists. What do you recommend doing around the garden hotel?

I forgot - there is also the underground fabric market around the corner which is worth a few hours if you iike that sort of thing.

Bars& restaurants are the major draws. But the biggest reason for my preference is that its central to the city giving you large amount of transport options, allowing you to get to all corners quickly and easily.

Hmm, well we've not even got 48 hours, so I don't think we need to "get to all the corners". Not interested in bars, actually prefer to be away from that kind of thing. Any hotel suggestions near Dongfang then?

If you like a quiet area, Shamian Dao is always good. You can pretend to be some expat colonialist.

There are only 2 worth talking about in that area and they are right next to each other. Dongfang and Mariott.

If you want budget, then there is one more that is about 20min walk away, right in the middle of the local scene. Its lovely and cheap. Hotel Elan, its about 1/2 the price of the others and in a cute and bustling neighborhood, still near the park.

I've personally stayed at the Hilton Tianhe and the Grand Hyatt, both are fairly new and excellent, especially for the price.

Food wise, I'd go with chinese food. In my experience, non-chinese food is pretty rubbish in Guangzhou but chinese food is excellent.

Look harder or use a guide or 2. There are some fantastic places in GZ.

I've eaten at Paulaner, I was not impressed.

Trying to find a good steak in Guangzhou is rather hard as well.

Mine are more generalizations, it's very easy to find good chinese food - pretty much anywhere that is reasonably busy. Finding good western food (I'm sure it exists) will take considerably more effort and research.

FYI, here is the china equivalent of openrice.
