Does someone have the Taiwan Lonely Planet guide?

This is a long shot, but does someone happen to have the Taiwan Lonely Planet guide and no longer need it? Ideally the 2011 (8th) edition?
I've requested it from the library, but it seems it will take awhile to get it and need to start planning my trip asap!
I would be happy to compensate for it, since I know how annoying it is to buy a book and use it only once.
    Thanks in advance!
(Incidentally, I would be happy to return it in April if someone did have it and wanted it back...)

Just download the chapters you need. You only have to pay for the ones you want. Then you get the pdf, straight away, can load onto a phone or whatever if you want to travel light or print it out if you want to. I have not purchased the actual books for years now - this is much better and much faster!

    See here: http://shop.lonelyplanet.com/taiwan/...oppod#chapters

As it happens, I have this (as PDF) but it asks you not to share it so as to enable them to stay in business. Which I respect.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think I still prefer the actual book, but this might be helpful for the time being. (Incidentally, you nearly invite me to ask for the pdf, but nevermind. )

I find the older editions of LP better than the more recent ones. And, Taiwan has not changed that much over the last decade.

Maybe try a second hand bookshop - for example Flow.

I wouldn't bother. I had the one from the library over CNY and sort a few days in taipei. Waste of time. Whilst practical information was sort of ok, this copy of LP is a good example of things being portrayed completely differently to how they are in reality ie overplayed.

Thanks for the replies. We're not interested in Taipei, and want to focus on hiking in the Hualien region. Someone suggested getting it, as there aren't any hiking guides (yet!) for Taiwan.

Any advice for another more useful guide? Or which older edition would you recommend (those too are a bit of a pain to get!).

    Thanks!

There IS an excellent hiking guide for Taiwan... I just have to find it....
Also, Richard from Barking Deer is an excellent source of info and can get permits if you need them (you will, for any of the 3000m+ peaks).

OK - here is the Barking Deer website. Richard speaks Native English and is very helpful, but often out on the trails so email responses can be delayed: http://www.barking-deer.com

And here is the good website: http://taiwandiscovery.wordpress.com

He's also written a couple of books and if you put a comment on his website, he responds right away with really helpful information.

Finally, forumosa.com is a good resource. Many keen hikers on there will give info if you post a question.

(I have hiked several times in Taiwan, both in groups and self-organised, and found these three sources above to be excellent).

Have you looked at Richard Saunders' Taipei Escapes (2 books)? They may have them at Eslite in Hong Kong - they are on Eslite's own website.

The good website I listed above is by this guy. With links to how to buy his books as well as heaps of useful information in its own right.

    Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply. We know about this (and other) good websites. The problem is that we're both working full time+ and don't have time to read through blogs and pick out hikes and figure out accommodation, etc. etc.

I emailed Richard - no answer - then called him and finally spoke with him. He is too busy to help and hasn't even replied to my follow-up email. It's a pity, as we'd really like a service like that right now. Do you know of another hiking guide service? It was actually Richard that asked if I had the Lonely Planet and said that it had some stuff about the areas (he recommended). So we figured we'd get the LP and then work from there using these various blogs with information.

Those books about Taiwan aren't for the area we're interested in (as far as I could tell), so we haven't purchased them.
