Right on. The MTR hands down beat the Big Apple and the tube in terms of efficiency, cleanliness, reliability and price. It's far from perfect, but it sure stands hand and shoulders above many metro networks around the world.

As for the OP's question, I hate the MTR during rush hour and it's alright the rest of the time.

What? you don't like how the NY Subway gets a fresh coat of piss and vomit every night?

You have to be somewhat of a masochist or a troglodyte to like traveling in any subway however the HK one is one of the best in the world. It's frequent, not expensive and fairly clean for a subway. It is also generally unpleasant since it's often very crowded. I prefer to stay above ground and see light.

    * No we don't, but the MTR was rather different during that period.
I'm still trying to sell mine.

Moving, you clearly dont know what you are talking about.
The buses on Sunday are more frequent than on workdays,
just have a look on NLB bus company's website.

there are also mini buses, to areas where it makes sense to employ them.

Lastly, large parts of Lantau are country park.
You should be happy there are big MAN buses at all.
From TungChung to big buddha it takes 90 minutes au pied.

Have you thought about why he decided on stealth mode?

I have no idea how this thread started, but is this one of those "first world problems" that people have been arguing about recently?

The functionality of the rest of HK really highlights the disfunctionality of Lantau.
I was told that minibuses came into existence during the hardcore Communist days, when activists were encouraged by the Motherland managed to organise widespread transport strikes.

The workaround was via small private enterprise, with trucks carting people around instead. This eventually formalised into established minibus routes and real minibuses.

I have no idea if this is true, or just a good story. But if it's true then it would go some way to explaining why routes were not established on Lantau- there would not have been much of a population to demand transport workarounds back then.
