Cable car system can be extended - and should be

Lantau Development Advisory Committee holds fifth meeting

"an extension of the cable car system from Ngong Ping to Tai O and development of spa and resort facilities at Cheung Sha and Soko Islands are currently going through the process of selecting consultants and tendering, and will commence shortly"

Given the high density of Hong Kong and the high number of isolated government housing projects, tourist locations off the MTR. Alternatives to taxis and minibuses should considered.

The extension of the Ngong Ping cable car seems sensible and should allow people from the village to commute to jobs in Tung Chung and the airport (assuming the Gov would allow tourists to subsidise residents)

Where else should have a commuter or tourist cable car system in Hong Kong?

They can not even get the first one working 100% of the time, why waste money building another.

Better to punch a tunnel under Cheung Shan and build a light rail system to Tung Chung to Tai O.

It had some teething problems but seems to have been fine for the last few years.

Cable car construction costs are much lower then light rail or metro systems. More a replacement for minibuses than rail.

    Think aerial tram...

    that is complete nonsense.
a more frequent ferry connection would be much more convenient for TaiO residents.

A cable car every few seconds or a ferry every few hours? A cable car would significantly enhance the Mohring effect.

Tai o is one of the few unspoilt spots in Hong Kong. Why the hell would you want to despoil it with a cable car? I can't think of a more idiotic idea. And using is as a commuter line? Have you seen the prices the car currently charges? ??? Over 100 HKD vs 11 on the bus????

If you owned some property in Tai-Ao or grew up there and didn't want to move to get a job etc then the perspective would be different. Perhaps you are right Tai-Ao should be kept as a living museum.

It is not beyond the wit of the MTR to offer a monthly travel pass for the local.

    MTR > Monthly Pass Extra

Or a discount for using during peak commuter times rather than tourist times

MTR > Airport Express "Morning Express Service"

Why put a cable car to Tai-Ao?
Hong Kong has too few tourist attractions and when people come they probably don't want to be sat on a bus for hours.

I suspect many villagers in Tai O would be utterly horrified at the idea of bringing the cable car directly to them. I know people who chose to live there BECAUSE it is remote. Not everyone wants a direct MTR to Central. And as stated by someone else, a more frequent ferry service would probably be just as good, if not better. The cable car to Nong Ping currently takes about half an hour (excluding the queuing time, which can be much longer than that) so an extension would be even longer. The bus from Tung Chung to Tai O is only about 40 minutes. They wouldn't gain much. The ferry from Tai O to Tung Chung is about 25-30 mins, so that's an improvement, and then to Tuen Mun another 30 mins - which gives them more options about where to go. But it does not run very often, so having an (hourly, perhaps) ferry would be a very cheap yet effective solution. Remember, there are not that many people living in Tai O - they don't actually need infrastructure catering for 100's of thousands, just enough for a few hundred.

obviously, some here don't even live on Lantau.
Transport is needed most before and after cc operating hours
