    Cathay Pacific excess baggage charges

Why does Cathay Pacific charge so much for excess baggage, compared to other airlines?

Extra Baggage Charge | Baggage - Cathay Pacific

For example, on an Economy London to Hong Kong Cathay Pacific flight, a second bag of 23kg would cost US$60 / kg, i.e. US$1,380 (HKD10,695). There appears to be no pre-booking of a second bag charge to lower the cost.

By comparison, on an Economy London to Hong Kong British Airways or Virgin Atlantic flight, a second bag of 23kg would cost GBP55 total (c. HKD660).

You need to turn the clock back to the British Caledonia UK military-shared flights.

US$60 is cheap. LH charges EUR 150.

I called up CX and confirmed it is definitely US$60 per kilo gram of extra baggage above the 20kg economy allowance. It simply makes taking more luggage on CX uneconomical!

So a second 20kg bag on this flight would cost US1,200 (HKD9,300)

Ummm, that is PER KG Cathay charges stupid amounts of money.

When AirNZ was doing that route, you could get it for $100 per extra bag which was reasonable. $60 per KG is nowhere near "cheap"...Its highway robbery.

Yes USD$60 PER KILO GRAM - i.e. an extra 20kg bag is USD$1200; well in excess of the cost of the ticket itself in economy (and this is just one way I am referring to for excess baggage)

Depends where you are flying. I've always been able to go 1-2kg over on each bag.

Every FF gives you bits here and there. But for "normal" extra charges, Cathay just takes the piss.

It means flying on a different airline if you want to take more than the standard luggage allowance!
