I've used bidding upgrade with Air New Zealand from PE to business from AKL to HKG. Paid about HKD2k. Thought it was worth it for a 12 hour flight.

Ok, thank you. I was looking at Cathay, can you share which airline please and whether it is direct or not. I'm looking for mid-August and struggling to get economy return to London below 11k.

I'm not flying direct as it is much cheaper to connect and it usually only adds a few hours at most.
Direct flights for the summer will cost 11k by this time. You should have booked many months ago to get a cheaper deal.

The cheapest flights for August can be found on Skyscanner. For my dates, the cheapest is Malaysian who want 6.5k.

Another trick of airlines to squeeze yet more money out of passengers.
