So I have pretty much decided on Taiwan.

    tentative itinerary:
Day 1 - fly to Taichung and head to Sun Moon Lake
Day 2 - Sun moon Lake in day and in evening move to Taipei
    Day 3 - Taipei exploration
Day 4 - Taipei exploration till lunch and move to Hualien
Day 5 - visit to Taroko Gorge and fly banck to HK in evening

Is last day too hectic ? I am open to suggestions to itinerary.

    Are you driving?

If yes, then you can go directly to Toroko from Sun Moon Lake by taking the Central cross highway.

No, I am not driving. Everything would be either public transport or some private car/coach.

Strikes me as way too packed. Drop one of the destinations.

Personally, if I was going to go to the mountains, I'd spend the whole 5 days there (given that a good chunk of the day will be chewed up with transport each way).

If you're not driving I have to agree with the others. It's way too packed of a schedule. Alishan is a good suggestion.

From where will you fly back ?
If from Hualien I do not see any issue.

You could take a taxi to Taroko park, which costs 10 US

I heard that direct flights to Hualien were going to end soon. Not sure what date though.

    Points well noted.

About return flight, yes its from Hualien to HK. I checked direct flight being scheduled with HKExpress in evening.

for a 5-day trip we spent the first day at Taichung (Taroko mall which had jumpin gym type play area for kids which my 3-year old didnt wanna leave) and then night market. The next day picked up car for 2 days (IWS rental in Xitun highly recommended for reasonably priced but newish cars) and drove to qingjing farm in Renai where we stayed another night. The 3rd day drove to Puli (there was a wonderful waterfall on the way can't recall the name) , and were awed to see the sunset from the sunset point. The 4th day we returned to Taichung and explored the city further with the next day we flew back. I had never driven on the right before but bit of patience and a fantastic in-built navigation system helped a great deal.

Different people different preferences but I wouldnt prefer taipei as it's not much different from HK. Being closer to nature is what I intend to whenever I leave Hong Kong for a holiday.
