Why are the Chinese asking for HKD in Macau?

We have recently having a few awkward encounters today while holidaying in Macau. We have China people whom we don’t know asking us in Chinese if we have HKD. Do you know what is the motive behind this request? I suspect it has to do with money laundering or scam going on but does anyone know?

It would be a way to get your HKD and give you fake money in return.

When taking a taxi in China the old trick was to get the naive persons 100 RMB bill and switch it quickly for their fake one and hand you the fake one saying they don't trust that bill. If I got stuck with no change I'd make a big deal of taking a picture of my bill first. My Chinese friend took the fake taxi in Shenzhen and the driver gave him a China citizen - two fake 100s. By that time he found the 50 and but the ride cost 250 Y in total.

    shri and spode like this.

Why open a conversation? Obviously they want something...

The casino exchanges money too. No reason to ask you.

Well it’s not transaction request which associated with any services. For this I know.

It’s more for them to ask a stranger for exchange. It happens from toilet or anywhere.

think it may be the other way? may be asking if you need any HKD, presuming there are many mainland Chinese gamblers that have lost at the casino and have problems getting more HKD to try to win it back due to China's capital controls. loan sharks ..

There is only so much you can withdraw through official channels. I assume these individuals are part of a collective that tries to get rid of xx RMB every day.
