I totally agree on the Cathay position as they really have no choice when their business is completely dependent on the Chinese air space. And if they go out of business, this also means people will be losing their jobs. I am disappointed with the white terror happening within the company now, but will continue to fly with Cathay to help those fighting secretly to keep their jobs.

SFO would be cheaper, but HX cut the route a while ago. Now only UA, Singapore and CX fly the route. Connecting through Taipei, the Philippines or the mainland will save you a lot.

More bad news from HK Airlines.

They are cutting Los Angeles from February and cutting overall flights by 6%. I wonder how long they will last for as they've been struggling over the last few years.

Not all bad news though as Singapore Airlines and United have made noises in the media that passenger demand from Hong Kong (not to!) is increasing in strength towards pre-protest levels.

Hong Kong Airlines is pretty much the ATV of HK aviation.
War in the boardroom while employees can’t get paid on time.

Their long haul ambitions doomed the company. They operate a rather profitable Asia network but their long haul services are facing trouble.
One of their failed routes for instance was HK - Moscow which they flew in business class only (!) planes (for reference even Cathay doesn’t fly to Moscow anymore).
Their long haul network lacks recognition from business travellers which arguably makes up the bulk of the passengers. They don’t benefit from an alliance since they aren’t in one, limited codesharing operations especially stateside.

It’s a shame they sold off HKExpress, which, as HK’s only budget carrier, is a huge asset. I’m not airline business specialist but it would have been wiser in my opinion to keep the budget airline and abandon the full service carrier model if things got that bad. At least they’d be able to complement Cathay Pacific instead of competing directly.

I’d agree with TeachHK, they are doomed.

Well, Cathay obviously have their strategy of trying to keep yields high.

Think about it this way. Is it better for CX to sell 100 seats at an average of $4000 or 201 seats at an average of $2000?

You might think 201 seats is better, but their costs will be much lower and profits higher if the flight has just 100 passengers. Not only do you need less fuel, fewer staff etc, but taxes and government charges are a much higher proportion of that $2000 fare than the $4000 one as they are a fixed charge, not percentage.
