You can rate Uber taxis as well, so they tend to offer better service (friendlier).
I remember from when I was little, everyone would be yelling on the street for a cab: “Hey Taxi!”.
It’s good exercise to cuss at assh@les when you’re mistreated. It used to be a city thing. Maybe we’re too polite (or too shy?) now.
Always had terrible service from HK taxi drivers. This drivers aged up to 35 are really unfriendly and tries to scam by adding extra fees. Plenty over 55 yrs old drivers who are downright dangerous.
Would like to choose Uber everytime for a better and more comfortable service, but am just to cheap to pay the extra.
Beggers can’t be choosers, but I can be a moaner
Between buses, minibuses, and MTR, I found it easy to get almost anywhere in HK without taxis (because no kids, just the odd cat vet appointment). Once I finally figured out most of the bus routes I was interested in, I ended up taking them quite a bit. My ferry came in right next to the Star Ferry and then a bus terminal next to that for getting around Kowloon. Sometimes (in the winter) when I needed to get something in Mong Kok (hamster stores), I just walked up from the ferry terminal, really wasn't too bad.
Here in Taipei, there are cheap bike rentals right outside almost all subway and train stations- and free if you just took the subway. So once you get off the MRT, hop on a bike, can get anywhere, I hardly walk anywhere anymore. Sidewalks are wide enough for both bicycles and pedestrians, some even have marked bike lanes on the sidewalk. As a result, I am lucky not to need to take a taxi, ever, in Taipei.
Are there any other ‘developed’ countries in the world where an 84 year old would be permitted to drive a taxi?

You will find that many older taxi drivers don't need to drive for a living but keep doing it because they have nothing else to do. After driving for 40+yrs for some it becomes life itself.
