Air Asia - bad experiences / flight cancellations?

I have booked with them twice, same experience both times. Booked the time and date I needed, then about a week later got an email re-scheduling the date and time of the flight. Had to rebook with another airline and it was difficult to get a refund, it was going to take about 4 months so I ended up doing a credit card charge back. This was 2018, I cannot imagine Covid has improved their service.

AirAsia's punctuality leaves to be desired: they are always late. And my (more or less recent) experience is that they try to fill up their planes to the max. Meaning that if they run multiple flights per day (e.g. KL - Singapore, morning, afternoon, evening) they'll cancel one a few days in advance and push those passengers on the remaining flights.
About their pricing: they are not as cheap any more as they used to be compared to their competition. Nowadays you have to pay for so many things separately (not included in the basic fare) that by the time you know your total cost, you come to realize that others charge the same price.

Thanks for sharing guys. In the end I booked with Thai Airways, where returning flight was a bit on the early side. But I figured I'd rather tough that out than roll the dice with Air Asia.

I’ve taken Air Asia like 7 times and they're consistent in giving me a bad experience. The flight is cheaper and that’s the only good thing. Watch your excess baggage checks. 7kg becomes 11kg on their scales. I have taken photos of their scales.

I have never had a bad experience with them when it came to luggage,
they never checked the weight of my luggage
consisting of bag pack and carry on that looked bulky due to the cover.
Only exception was at KL airport

When we could go to Macau, I used to book the AirAsia flights from there to and from Thailand/ Malaysia for the short breaks (which thankfully are back on the agenda). I used to treat Macau as a very nice add on at the end of the first holiday, before coming back to work and the humdrum existence in Hong Kong.

I usually travelled with just hand luggage with Air Asia - the check in luggage prices saw the price go up - although many carriers have this policy now, even with long haul.

My Thai flight TO BKK was half an hour late. The return is currently running about an hour late.

Would normally never fly them, but to Kota Kinabalu they were the only option. Very happy that they did fly there and yes there was like an hour delay on the flight, but it was announced over SMS while we still were home, so no big deal. No frills experience with on Kota Kinabalu side a pretty stressful looong queue for check-in as it was multiple flights leaving from there. I happened to had booked some Fully flex tickets for a bit extra which enabled us to skip the queue, very worthwhile as we came late (not following the 3h before on the airport bla bla recomendation)
