Safe to go to China with a US passport?

This is probably me being ignorant...

But is it safe for an American Citizen (with a US passport) to travel to China?

I went ot the US consultant website and it says: Level 3: Reconsider travel

I also have an American Citizen friend in Hong Kong who manages a large team team in China and refuses to go with to go: He works for a large well known MNC and they are okay with it.

Reason I am asking is because I won a flight ticket from that COVID Cathay flight giveaway. Free economy flight th Hangzhou....! Not ideal location but I figure I take advanage of this free flight.

Tim Cook is there .. or was there..

I would say considering all the macro geo political financial shit going on .. it's safe.

China does not need shit blowing up next week.

Hangzhou is amazing. If you can afford to, stay at the Grand Hyatt directly on the West Lake. Visit the Lingyin temple and the tea plantations in Longjing.

Wait, the Cathay flight giveaway TELLS you where to go? You can't just pick (say, within a certain radius)? That is kind of...lame.

Anyway, in a related question, if you are a US passport holder who had a long-term visa (I had a 10-year visa) that got "canceled" during covid, has it been revived? Or do I need to get another one (a hassle and expense...). Thanks in advance...

Ah, apparently China just clarified its position on March 15th:

Answer: According to policy adjustments effective on 15 March 2023, if you hold a Chinese Visa issued before 28 March 2023 which is still valid, you may enter China without re-applying for a new one. If the visa has expired, kindly apply for a new one.

Far too dangerous!!. One can drown in the lake or choke on a tea leaf.

Best avoid the country at all costs.

    - yes, all previously valid visas have now been reinstated.

Ignore the official rhetoric; US government are far bigger shit stirrers than the Chinese. If you aren't important enough to be used as a pawn, Chinese authorities couldn't care that you hold a US passport. Nor are the average Joe interested in kidnapping tourists in China.

Hangzhou is indeed beautiful - and Four Seasons hands down the best hotel in the city. However it does cost an arm and a leg.

Try to avoid the weekend if possible: it's a top destination for affluent Shanghaiese, and not only becomes busy but can become very expensive during holiday periods.

This is super interesting that they uncancelled all those visas

I read from this that they are more panicked about the economy than they are letting on, and are chasing revenue at all costs
