Give India a miss for long transit change over flights. NOT WORTH THE HEADACHE!!!!
In India, if you're going to miss your flight, the public will always let you pass through them at security and immigration. Seen it happen every single time for 20 years.

India e-visa is now US$10 for a few months. Does take about 20-30 minutes to fill it out and submit, but pretty quick processing if you are eligible. (Don't think Chinese passport holders/ or those of Chinese origin) are eligible.

This snail pace is very true. Actually when I left India last month, I must have gone at a quiet time, was quite empty only a few people in front of me at the security and immigration queue. I thought it was my lucky day. But it still took 30 minutes to pass through and I was really cursing under my breath. You need a lot of patience in India. Even the hotel checkout an hour earlier, same thing only 2 people in front of me but I dont know why the hotel checkout was typing on the keyboard for half an hour for each guest that checkout, dont know what the hell they were doing. Since I paid in full at checkin I ended up throwing my hotel card on the counter and saying "Gotta go, paid already, see ya" and jumped in a taxi. Not waiting around for this shit.
