I lived for about three years in Shenzhen with my wife and small child. I never felt unsafe. Perhaps Shenzhen is even safer lately than Hong Kong.

And definitely safer than most of Europe nowadays.

I walked around futien alone - no safety issues. Cameras and 'security' people everywhere I went! Otherwise meituan drivers also all over the place in Futien!

Shenzhen and other Chinese cities have CCTV at every corner, indoors and outdoors. Security, uniformed Police and Gong An are everywhere. That is the reason for the relative safety there. One thing you'll notice in Shenzhen immediately is how much wider the sidewalks are, how relative quiet it is as all taxis and busses are electric. The spaciousness in general with unobstructed views as compared to the urban jungle of HK. As long as you stay in the urban area it's very safe except for petty crime like pickpockets. The MTR trains and stations look very clean and modern compared to HK.

Before Nov 2023, I visited China less than 5 times in my life. Then my friend offered to bring me to Shenzhen for a day visit for the first time since 2010.

The I installed alipayhk and wechat and went to Shenzhen with my friend.

We went to the lok ma chau border and took the Shenzhen subway from Futian check point to Convention and Exhibition Center station (2 stations by distance). There are three malls in that station.

I was shocked to see Shenzhen (at least Futuan) is cleaner and safer than Hong Kong, Chicago and Thailand.
Since Nov 2023, I went to Shenzhen two more times by myself (single woman) to visit the public parks to see Taxodium distichum.
