Personally, I'd avoid Tokyo (ultra urban like HK) and hit Kyoto area (light urban / rural / home of traditional Japanese culture). Either will be a great trip. Enjoy.

I'm not so sure about Kyoto. It is nowadays so very much overwhelmed with tourists that you only get to enjoy the scenery if you are there before 9AM. After 9AM the only thing you see are tourists.
