    airline compensation for cancelled flight

A relative booked a flight from EU to Bangkok via Helsinki with Finnair roundtrip for 1,200 Euro ( I know ).
His return flight to EU was cancelled and he was rebooked by the airline on KLM.
He arrived at his final destination 3 1/2 hours later than with the originally booked flight.

Can he expect big $$ ?
And can he sell his claim to an agency that then deals with the airline?
    Anyone with on hand knowledge?

    Thanks

The relevant regulation is below, from which at a quick read they would get 300 Euros. But if this was due to the closure of Pakistani airspace then I think they get nothing as it was not foreseeable and not the airline's fault. Finnair has an online application for applying for any compensation due (Mrs Lam got some a few years ago for a missed connection en route to Paris).

Also, Finnair booked his KLM flight with Carry on, only.
So he had to pay extra for check in luggage, which was included in his original flight.
    Weird

I checked back in the records - Mrs Lam's Finnair delay was in 2019. It took just over 2 months to work through the process and get the compensation.

Finnair should add this to the compensation also, obviously.

He should just be persistent and quote the relevant rules under EU261.

I'm still waiting for compensation from Finn Air from a year ago!

At least they acknowledge they owe me.

Finnair is notoriously bad to honor the EU261 rules, slow to pay, or not paying, it's a calculated strategy from their side. There are companies that will take a cut of your money that will process the request on your behalf, as they have lawyers to threaten Finnair the payment success is higher.

In i similar way I threatened Cathay to take them to the small claims court citing a reference case under global aviation practices that Cathay has signed up to, after this type of threat I was suddenly paid the full amount instead of a partial payment for my broken luggage. Again this is strategy from their side to try to make us accept lower compensation.

For this, your friend should raised directly to Finnair. They have to compensate your friend for that.

Now for the delay and EU261, it all comes down to why they rebook it. Airlines are quite good at quoting weather... to evade the EC261

All airlines are slow to pay.
I had to constantly chase BA to payout and they drag it out to the very last date.

CX ground staff was fine to pay $500 cash at HKIA for my wife's 'taobao' suitcase being only slightly damaged.
I was like wow... but that was 2019.
