Indonesia? Has cities, beaches, volcanoes, and species of wildlife unique to Indonesia alone. You can pretty much customise how you want to spend your time there (although don't pick things too far apart, traveling will kill you!).

Alternatives: Australia, New Zealand (south island in particular), Malaysia (lots of wildlife safari type tours there).

New Zealand is a 12 hour flight, but only a 4-5 hour time shift, so jetlag is not too big a deal. Remember that the seasons are reversed, so March is autumn and May is winter. If you like driving then many people rent cars or even mobile homes and drive through New Zealand (or one of its islands) for 10-14 days stopping at various attractions en route. I haven't done it yet, but it's definitely on my to do list.

how do you constantly take months off at a time for backpacking? do you quit jobs to do this? or do you take non-paid vacations or what? the wife and I are considering taking 3 months off to do a big travel adventure ... but not sure how to handle work.

    suggestion (although longer flights)
    Madagascar or galapagos
    Antarctica

guam is interesting.... the only problem would be a visa for hubby.

technically, he is my "voluntary" employee. he works for my company, no income, i claim all of the income...i wonder if they would grant him a visa? he has a BN(O) passport...

does anyone know if US immig would consider my income when processing HIS application?

BN(O)s don't need a visa for Guam for stays of up to 15 days.

It's one of the places where a BN(O) is still better than an HKSAR passport.

Guam for 10 days? And I heard people on this board saying they'd be bored in Singapore after three days...

Kids love wildlife --> Thailand? It is a short trip on the plane (12h to NZ can be a pain with a 3y old), you could fly to Chiang Mai, have the kids ride on an Elephant, do some nice (easy) hiking, then take one of their lovely night trains down to the south and spend some time on Ko Phi Phi or Krabi (If snorkeling and such meet your 'activity' requirements).

Other alternative - Bali? Lovely place as long as you stay away from Kuta (the local equivalent of Balneario 6 on Playa the Palma), plenty of wildlife (monkeys ), most lovely landscape, food and all kinds of outdoor activities. There is a tiny island named Nusa Lembongan southeast off Bali, no cars or roads there. I loved it. What might be a drawback is medical quality. In Thailand, you find European/US trained medical staff in any bigger city (and some expat doctors in most tourist centers). I don't know about Bali's medical standards, but I guess it matter when travelling with little kids. But most likely someone on Geobabies can advise here.

Kids are very welcome in both places, and the rather low costs of living mean you can always take the most comfortable option (which I expect would be budget-busting in Japan. But then, maybe not yours.

Bookmarked the thread. If I'm ever married, I'll send the link to my wife just after our ninth anniversary
