    Driving in Hong Kong

What is it with Hong Kong drivers?! Just because they are doing the speed limit, they think they don't need to move over to the slower left or middle lanes of a carriageway. I know in the UK on the motorway, even if you were in the middle lane doing the limit, the police would tell you to move inside if the inside lane is clear.

Also on roundabouts, they insist on using the left hand land when exiting at the 3rd or 4th exit.

This kind of stuff really gets on my case, what the heck do they teach drivers in Hong Kong?!

yes some driver do block the fast lane by doing the speed limit, i have seen police bikes telling them to move over.
Yes the roundabout are quite fun to watch with all the near misses and crashes.

its not just locals that do that, i have seen plenty of expats driving their expensive BMW X5/Merc's etc just zoom out at roundabouts making the other driver who is in the roundabout already to slam on their brakes.

Just be grateful that HK does have some sort of driving rules in place, just 1 hr across the border, its free for all on the roads. 2 lane roads with 3 cars driving along at the same time, cars stopping on the middle of the highway to look at road signs or talking on the phone or even worse reversing back because they missed the exit. some very scary cases i have seen while traveling in China daily before.

it's called the lack of driving etiquette, not so bad in NT though, worse in tst, mong kok and cwb.

i also believe that it is not mandortary to use the right lane when near to roundabout to make to the 3rd/3th/5th exit.

believe me china is far more worse.

also those idiotic inital d wannabes who tail gate you when you're on the middle lane and the fast lane is free are usually the ones who will be a statistic in future media or get caught by the police eventually.

It's not mandatory, but in the UK where I learnt to drive, the Highway Code had a diagram on the cover setting out the roundabout recommended lane usage. It seems the local yokels have no idea about how to use roundabout lanes properly!

UK has their own laws to govern the road, this is hong kong post 97!!

in UK, you can drive at 90mph without getting caught, here, if you go past 120kph (70mph) you will definitely get stopped.

actually i believe the etiquette is quite similar to london drivers, lack of space creates a dog eat dog environment, we that what i believe, if you're from manchester, driving should be similar to birmingham as it's alot less tense or aggraviting.

but at least here you don't get chavs trying to chase you in their clapped out metro/205 causing a danger to the roads to everyone else.

Hong Kong will forever have a piece of Brit in it - that's what made coming here more bearable!

I can't agree with you on London, Trafalgar Sq is busy but at least they know what lanes to use! Having said that, I found Marble Arch a flippin' nightmare!!!

The Chavs here wouldn't be caught dead in anything other than a souped up Mitsubushi or Saburu type car - and you got to hand it to them, these kids have got balls and can drive!

It's not the Chavs that get on my t*ts...it's the weekend drivers, which happens to be like 30% of the driving population in Hong Kong

totally agree on this part, them weekend drivers just clog up the roads especially at roundabout or by driving 30 kmh on a single lane road and looking at views while 10-20 cars behind cant overtake so its like a long snake. they really do get on my t*ts as well.

be glad... out where i live, they send all of the learners... after a long saturday at work, i do NOT want to toddle at 20km/hr down the road looking at the scenery.... i WANT TO GO HOME.... AS FAST AS POSSIBLE.....if you see an angry gwei-po shaking her fist and muttering angry (not for print) words... THAT'S ME!

as for round-abouts... i curse them EVERY DAY! on my way to work i go through no less than 7 of them in 40 minutes! it's enough to drive one mad!

Wimpy weekend drivers also clog up the tunnels, if they can't drive at the speed limit of 70km/h when there is a good 50m in front of them, why are they driving at all?!
