for flights to china from either hk or sez, check out ctrip and elong (as already mentioned). also have a look at travelzen, i've found them to be good in the past.

The advantage of travelzen is that there is no 'international credit card' surcharge.

If flying to Shanghai, consider Spring Airlines for some very cheap fares, although you have to go to either Zhuhai or Guangzhou.

To the twit to red blobbed me for the train as a "silly idea" - what a loser. To give people options is not "silly" - the train may be 24 hours, but you can sleep on it, so can still get much the same time in Beijing as one might from travelling to somewhere like Guangzhou, flying, delays, having to travel in from the airport when you arrive (rather than being in the centre) and then having to get a hotel for the night.

Might have worked, might not. This site is all about giving people help and options - not just what YOU think is the right answer.

is there a website for more info on this train? It sounds really cool !
Is it something to book far in advance? Costs? Is it comfortable to sleep on? Safe? Anyone that has done it?

You can book 60 days in advance for the train from Hong Kong. There is also a train from Shenzhen which is daily and slightly cheaper, but that can only be booked 10 days in advance.

It is safe and comfortable - although paying for soft sleeper is more comfortable. Food is ok on board - there is a restaurant car, or trolleys come around through the day with hot and cold food.

A colleague of mine did it (the train) with 2 kids - they really enjoyed it - made the travelling "part of the holiday".

    Thanks for the link PDLM.
I agree, MovingIn07 I think its pretty fun if you've never done it before and there must be some good views along the way. So I'm glad you mentioned it even if it is no use to the OP, Green blobby for you!

I am hoping for Harry Potter style booth rooms here !
