Where to stay to visit Tai Po Kau nature reserve?

    Hello,

my wife and I will be visiting Hong Kong at the end of November, and wish to visit Tai Po Kau nature reserve for quite a few days. I'm interested in finding cheap places to stay nearby, or details of bus routes.
Is there an online bus planning website somewhere? I've been unable to find anything so far that shows routes on a map.

I think the nearest hotels maybe in Sha Tin, which is 3 or 4 stops away on the railway (25 mins travel)

KMB buses run in that part of HK.

There is Ascension House, but that is in Shatin. Still fairly close, and cheap. There is a YHA at Sze Lok Yuen Hostel (Tai Mo Shan)

Details of bus routes on the AFCD site

there is also a small and basic hotel in Tai Po called "Tai Po Hotel". It's behind the Jockey Club on Kwong Fuk Road. You can catch the 28K green minibus from Kwong Fuk Road to the start of the nature trails on Tai Po Road - journey takes about 10 minutes.

edit: you can also catch the 28K from its starting point at Tai Po Market East Rail station - sometimes better to get on at the beginning of the route as they only have 16 seats and it doesn't take much to fill them up. That way you can stay anywhere that gives you easy access to the East Rail line. The full journey on the 28K (from Tai Po Market station to Shatin City) Hall costs $8. If you are happy telling the driver your destination in Cantonese (it's 'Dai Bo Gau') then he can adjust the meter for the proper fare (probably about $5). Otherwise payting the full fare isn't going to break the bank. A taxi will cost about $20 from Tai Po Market station.

It's definitely the most covenient, but not what I would call cheap. Lowest rate is $1000 per night.

Hong Kong is relatively small place with very reasonable and efficient transport.

If I were doing this, I would stay in TST or Causway Bay so that we are close to restaurants, night life as well as massage places to take care of aching feet at the end of a long day of walking.

A taxi from Causeway to TaiPo is less than 200HKD/25USD
A taxi from TST to Taipo is less than $150/20USD
Obviously, public transport would be much cheaper
