HK to Sanya overland - ideas?

I just booked a flight home from Sanya on 31 Dec. Plan is to take some time over xmas to travel overland (and I assume ferry!) to Sanya thru southern China - nothing too hard or too rushed.

Any suggestions for routes/must sees/pitfalls to watch out for?

You could go via Kaiping and then MaoMing before reaching Haikou. If you catch a train (there is an overnight one from Guangzhou that stops in MaoMing), the train goes on a ferry across the Qiongzhou strait.

That sounds interesting... How easy is it to research and book train tickets? Any good internet resources? Can I book in HK somewhere or do I need to go over the border to do it before I go?

The K407 goes from Guangzhou to Haikou (21:20 - 08:54). See travelchina guide for a train timetable. You could possibly book tickets through CTS in Hong Kong at HK$100 surcharge per ticket. I'd go to Guangzhou, spend the night there, and try to get the ticket through the hotel travel desk. There are a few things to see in Guangzhou as well - Shamian Island for example. You can also catch a bus from Kaiping to Guangzhou.

There are direct buses to Kaiping from Prince Edward - see transisland
