3 hours is excessive for HKIA. I typically check in 55 mins in advance (never do online checkin, but I do use the First Class checkin so that's no time at all) - the security line is the only issue and even when it's been really, really bad (around Xmas etc, flowing out the hall) it never took more than 20 mins and I never missed a flight. If you have to queue to drop bags, add another 20 mins or so, but you don't need more than that.

Who cares about your layover in Tokyo?

What possible connection does it have to someone being advised to arrive early for a departure out of HKG?

Any reasons why some airports require passengers taking off their shoes while others don't?

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Only selective airports do that. HK, Japanese and Guilin, China airports did not do it. If added securities do prevent terrorism, I am all for it.

Your not the only one...i am also for it.
I think some American airports and London is following Amsterdam airport (i know one airport in Holland) are going or debating to have the body scanners to be put in or already in(?) for the extra measure even though some groups are against it! I wouldnt mind going through this....this would be another topic

Because they can, and don't argue with them. I would avoid wearing platform shoes or Sarkozy boosters though.
