China trip from Hong Kong with mum

My mum and aunt are travelling to Hong Kong for a 2 week trip in June. They have visited previously and we've been to Maucau, Shenzhen etc. together.

Am keen to take them over into China for a 3 day trip somewhere picturesque and interesting that's not too far to travel from HK. Also would be good to be a more relaxed location rather than a huge city.

Am thinking Guilin? Any thoughts? The ladies are in their 60s but good fun and up for an adventure.

    Thanks!

    Guilin and Yangshuo. See yangers

Fly to Guilin and arrange airport pickup from your hotel in Yangshuo - Li River Retreat, Moon Resort and Mountain Retreat recommended.

I'll second the Yangshuo recommendation but with a slight (more adventurous) twist.

    1) Take the overnight train from Shenzhen to Guilin and then bus/taxi/carpickup to Yangshuo

    2) Stay in a charming converted village. 2 choices:
    a) Yangshuo outside inn : Yangshuo Outside Inn.
    b) Giggling Tree : The Giggling Tree

Lijiang! Fabulous place. Only 2 hrs flight from Shenzhen airport. Really interesting to walk around the old city. Cheap accommodation. Very well set up to handle tourists.

See two photos - one of Tiger Leaping Gorge (2hr drive from Lijiang - many tours) and also Lijiang itself.

Been to both and both good. Only issue with Lijiang is the tourists, but you can get outside the place for some fabulous scenary.

Stayed a night in Banyan Tree resort. Great place if not exceptional but expensive. You can get on a bike and ride out to the nearby village really worth it.

What's wrong with the tourists there? The spitting/half puking/ sounds like near death from flem? Or the shoving?

There are just alot of them. But they seemed no worse behaved than anywhere else in the world full of tourists!
