Calling all keen readers - book club

    Hi all,

I love reading thought provoking books in a wide variety of topics and love to talk about them. The type of books that I enjoyed reading recently include

    Collapse - Jeremy Diamond
The History of Nearly Everything - Bill Bryson
Social Intelligence - Daniel Goleman (Thank you, Chris)

I'm keen to find others who like to get together to form some discussions about interesting books regularly. To get things started, I was recently recommended to read A Colossal Failure of Common Sense

"By Lawrence G McDonald, the hard-driving Lehman Brothers trading Vice President, and the #1 New York Times bestselling author Patrick Robinson, the man who wrote Lone Survivor for the Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell.

Direct from the heart of Lehman Brothers, the bank that smashed the world economy, comes an incredible blow-the-lid-off account of the greed, the misjudgements, the dreadful stupidity of men who should have known better. Revealed by a man who was there, the eyewitness, Larry McDonald. Anyone, laymen or expert, can understand the crucible of a Wall Street trading floor by reading “A Colossal Failure Of Common Sense.” This is a black box of secrets. And now Larry McDonald rips the lid off."

If you are interested in reading and discussing about books, please chime in and let's see if we can put something together!

    Hi Kitty,

Thanks. Was aware of Chris' gatherings. I thought it hasn't been in session for a while. Though I like some psychology books, I'd like to expand into other type of topics as well. I thought the one you recommended sound interesting though and would like to pick it up some time.

Would you be interested in topics outside of psychology? If so, come join us. I'll come to Chris' gatherings as well some time.

Sounds like you love finance/economics. Don't miss THE ATLAS SHRUGGED by Ayn Rand ! That book 's supposed to be childish, naive and very thought-provoking, #2 after THE BIBLE by Him. I failed reading it after few pages, as it has around 1000 pages but I'm sure you'd do it better than me.

    quote:
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord Of The Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

Sounds good. All excellent books (btw - it's Jared Diamond, I believe).

    hi people,

this sounds great, like we have another book club going already. i was just wondering if we could settle on a non-psychology book and read it first, then meet up some time next week or whenever to discuss it?

my very limited repertoire of non-psychology books include Freakomonics & Outliers... so I am happy to pick up any books that you guys recommend.

hope we can decide and meet up soon!

Funny quote . The Atlas Shrugged happened to be the favorite book of one of my good friend whom I look up to. He's arguably childish, if we think about it, all idealists are to a point maintaining "childish" principles about the world and refuse to budge at sometimes remarkable prices. Surprisingly, Miles' very successful by even the conventional measurement, money. Sometimes things do work out.

Thanks for the book recommendation. You are welcome to join us!
