although nite hike sounds a bit challenging (with the details of snakes and all pepperd in ), i am tempted to join the group. couple fo questions:

    - where is the starting point?
    - how long/steep is the downhill route? do we need a hiking stick?

so, i am tentatively in .

I recommend everyone carry a whistle in addition to cell phones, just in case there are stragglers. Make lots of noise. A big group makes more noise than a small one, so you're less likely to have snake trouble. Now spiders and other creepy crawlies are another issue

I'd love to come along for this one, but I have to work Saturday. If you're in the market for a flashlight/torch, Maglite is hard to beat. Surefire's better if you have the money...

    Folks:

    1. The start point is Pak Kung Au, about 15 minutes in a taxi from Tung Chung.
    2. If you're reasonably fit and don't have knee trouble then you probably don't need a hiking stick, but bring one if you would usually take one when you're hiking.
    3. This walk is a well signposted stage of the Lantau Trail - it's usually referred to as strenuous hiking so don't underestimate it... But we'll be taking it steady so don't be too afraid either!
    4. Whistles are a good idea, and yes Maglites are as good as their reputation suggests
    5. I'll make a proper packing list nearer the time if people think they need it.

Don't be too discouraged by talk of snakes though. In my opinion it's like sharks, they have a bad rep but in the real world they don't cause a lot of trouble (yes I know someone was killed by a shark 10 years or so ago in HK but how many swimmers go out every day without trouble?)

    warning

    Hi hi..

This sounds absolutely cool! count me in..

However, i've only arrived this week, and know absolutely no one (besides the ppl in the office).. I would like to avoid being killed by strangers or snakes for that matter, on some dark mountain -- haha, kidding.... But seriously, I am a NYC native, so the "snakes" should be given fair warning..

I hope you all saw the picture on page 3 of today's SCMP?

To be honest people posting here with scare stories about snakes is doing my head in a bit, I'm sure it's putting off people who would otherwise think about coming along.

The chances of having any trouble with snakes are next to zero, so if you don't have anything positive to say, maybe you could do me favour and remember I'm trying to organise an event here?

    Hi everyone!

So, it's getting close to the date I set and I'd like to gather definite yes/no answers from people, as I think we need at least 5 people to be safe (in case of accidents/weirdos!)... I've had lots of "maybes", but it's still looking a little touch and go whether there are enough people on the day.

So, can the following people confirm 100% either way for me whether they'll come provided I can get at least a group of 5? PM me if you want my mobile number to speak to me on the phone about it...

    ticket2ride
    jonnye
    texasaxel
    devnagiri
    sblossom

Oh and of course anyone who's interested and hasn't spoken up yet, come along, it'll be a real experience and how often do you get a chance to do something like this? Tell your friends!

    Chris

I'll confirm that I'll be coming along. Although, can I sound like a wuss and say if it's pissing down with rain I'd prefer to give it a miss?
