How did you find your first job in HK?

    Hi,

I'm wondering how you find your first job in HK. I've seen some people say networking, however I can't see how that's possible as I'm guessing most people come to HK without knowing many people and are searching for a job before even able to get a network going.

Can you guys share your experience? Perhaps tell me how big your company was, what sector job is in and how you landed it/found it.

    Thanks!

Before I left the UK I told all my contacts that I was moving to HK, and asked if they knew anyone they could put me in touch with. I was given a few names, and I met up with those people when I first arrived. They then gave me more names of people it might be useful for me to have a chat with. I got my job through networking in this way.

A friend who had moved over here because of her husband's job transfer, clipped and sent me a "position vacant" ad from SCMP that fitted my specialist teaching skills & experience perfectly, to start in the middle of the local school year. That coincided nicely with finishing up the Australian school year - applied for the job and received the offer about 10 days later (this was back in the '80s - everything done by snailmail).

I came to HK on a tourist visa to look for a job. Into my 40th day..my boss found my CV on Asiaexpat and I signed the contract 2 days later....thats how I landed my job...

Emailed a few companies i was interested in working for when i was still living in the UK, heard back from a few, and kept in touch over a few months - came out on a holiday visa and met up with them all. Got offered a couple of jobs, took the one i was interested.

A previous survey here showed that the most common route was an internal transfer with a multinational. I think this is particularly the case for people who need an Employment Visa, probably less so for those that have the right to work in HK anyway.
