Moreover it has bad "atmosphere", not least owing to excessive antagonism by some parties

Doesn't really sounds like living the life to me.

If you want a beach lifestyle, go to somewhere with a proper beach, proper nature and proper clean air.
You haven't really said why you decided on Hong Kong, but I haven't heard of anyone who has come Hong Kong for to combine leisure/business/beach.

Have you looked at the Philippines, Thailand or even Vietnam?
You can live for a small fraction of the cost of living in Hong Kong and have a better lifestyle and setting. For one months living in Hong Kong (even in the NT), I would think that you could live very comfortably in the Philippines for at least six months. (of course there are visa restrictions there also)

And of course you run the risk of being brutally murdered, which is one for the 'disadvantages' column

Those are really good advises, don´t ignore them. regarding illegal work the chinese have a quite strange sense of humor...

but you are right T, your question hasn´t been answered yet. you should talk to an old man, who lives and works directly on the Stanley Beach. He sells there the Chinese Army figures and other "really old and worthy" stuff. And he loves to talk to us western people about the sense of life, the beuty of nature and the nonsense of mobile phones. Just visit him, it´s fund and mayby it gives you some ideas...
