    Teaching English courses

    Hi

Thanks to jayinhogkong for his help.

I'm coming to HK shortly with a visa. I want to look into teaching English. I have found and online course that supply courses.

1 in TEFL and the other site in TESOL. Which is the best one to complete that will help me get a teaching job?

I do not have a degree either.

I need all the help I can get so please let me know.

Or give me and email on

    [email protected]

    Thanks

    My 2 Cents

Your going to have MAJOR problems securing a teaching position in Hong Kong, because of the following reasons:

    1. No Teaching Experience
    2. No TEFL/TESOL Cert
    3. No College Degree

You are much better off securing your certification then working in mainland China for a year to get the experience under your belt...I would highly recommend you obtain at least an Associates Degree if you stand any chance of getting a teaching job in HK.

Also, on that note, major cities in China are starting to be tougher on teachers requiring them to be skilled professionals as the competition increases.....the days of the backpacker, party boy/girl and hippie teachers are becoming a thing of the past.

    Good luck

I am not sure which one is better out of TEFL/TESOL but I would get one of them for sure before coming if you can. There are some online courses you can take. Get Cert. Then apply at Language training centres in Hong Kong. You will not be eligible to work in schools but language centres will hire you and the pay should be alright. Get as many references you can about any training you have done! (Even if you trained someone how to mop the floor at mcdonalds, creative writing is the key) The government is getting sticky.

I agree with HKChigger. EMB is pretty sticky with qualifications and you best bet will be with the langauage schools. Even as an ELTA in a primary school, the min qualification is a Bachelor.

Sorry to say it is going to be hard for you. EMB aside, you are going to have a hard time getting work from private companies as well as you don't have the qualifications needed for sponsorship. In order for a non-EMB company yo sponsor they have to be able to prove to immigration that you are qualified and expereinced enough to handle the job.

Qualifications here mean you have a degreee and TEFL (not many people care which one). Most companies hiring for tutoring or part time teaching also want expereince - they don't want to be the first person taking a risk on you. You can get hired by a local company without expereince but with a degree, or with experience and TEFL but without all three its a lot harder. Even kindergartens here require a degree to sponsor.

It is much easier to go to the mainland first and teach for a year to gain expeirience. Though mainland China is getting fussier with it's requirements recently.

    Good luck!

I'm not sure what level of teaching you're looking for but my husband has just started a job at a language centre....no experience, no degree, no TEFL. He's teaching conversational English to people who already have a good grasp. The wage isn't great though and it's for extra spending money rather than live to on. He already has a dependant visa.

So if your visas already sorted and you're happy to take around 100-150HKD an hour, there are options.
