How do freelance writers get paid?

We're looking to hire a good freelancer or two to write some specialised content for us regarding HK's job market, particular industries etc.

How do writers typically get paid? Is it on a per-word basis? Per article?
Also what's the going rate for a good writer?

Usually per word but I've been paid on a project basis too.
It will totally depend on what you want written- you would pay someone more if they were in your industry and doing an industry specific piece than you would for someone doing a restaurant review.

The going rate for a good writer...I think John le Carre is around HK$10 per word, but you can probably get Dan Brown for HK$1 per word

On a more serious note - I just translate what I used to get paid in the UK to here (20p-50p per word, depending on type of work, length of article), and people don't seem to mind when I quote them. Most recently I quoted HK$4,000 for 1,000 words - roughly the same as the nationals are paying in the UK right now.
