Post Young Australian Civil Engineer - HK Prospects

    Hi There

I am looking at the opportunities available for myself in Hong Kong toward the end of 2007. I have approximately 5 years experience within civil engineering consulting in Australia where I specialise in geotechnical engineering. My experience includes site investigation, computer analysis and reporting on small to large projects and I have spent some time on major construction sites.

I hold a civil engineering degree from a well recognised Australian University and have done some post grad business study. In addition, I am a member of the Australian Institute of Engineers, however have not achieved chartered status yet (is this valued highly in hk?). I do not speak any languages apart from English.

Can anyone tell me what the prospects are like in HK for someone with my skills? If so, would I expect similar or more pay to Australia, and would consulting be the best area to stay in? (contract?) I am visiting Hong Kong during the year and thought that this might give me the time to talk with some companies/agencies as well. I have visited Hong Kong several times before and apart from loving the atmosphere, feel that the scale and diversity of projects might give me great experience for later in life (major tunnel projects etc).

Would appreciate any thoughts/comments that anyone might have!

    Cheers
    Deano

You might want to try the MTR.

Best bets are to build a contact list of people who have moved to HK from your company / clients / college and start pinging them.
