Salary Scale for Business Development Manager in HK

    Hi All,

I just got a job offer from Hong Kong (I'm a Singaporean currently working in China). It is a post for Business Development, the salary is at HK$ 55,000/mth (13 months) + financial bonus (typically 1 ~ 3 months, depending on results), 2 return Air-tickets per yr to Singapore. I have my wife and 2 young kids with me (2 and 3 yrs old).

Is this offer considered average, good or above good?
In total, I had 6 yrs work experience.

    Rgds,

Yes, one of those (or possibly poor). It rather depends on what sort of business it is that you are developing, and how much.

The answer to your question depends on a lot of things.

I myself am also a Business Development Manager. However my salary is very average, some would even say below average. In my industry the commission is where the big money is made and I'm happy with that.

If the salary is high but there isn't much room to make a lot of additional commission would you be happy with that?

With 6 yrs of experience so far I'd say this is an above average package. The return tickets and bonus are very good.

Must be a large international company you're working for right?

If I were you I'd take on the points made by the other posters, and scrutinize the bonus structure
in relation to the potential business you bring in. Is that on a scale that is comparable to other
similar roles within the same industry?

Not sure about Hong Kong but in the UK a Sales Development Manager could be a spotty kid selling Nokias at Carphone Warehouse.

Pretty meaningless without a job spec.

Yes, totally agree. Job titles are pretty meaningless without a JS.

    Thanks, here are the job specs;
    1. In charged of Account Receivables and Inventories.
    2. In charged of personnel reporting to specified Business Unit (about 20 personnel, includes Program Engineers, Program Administrators).
    3. Responsible for overall Sales. (HK$ 15mil/ month)
    4. Reports to the Managing Director.
    5. Developing new businesses, target 1~2 new customers per year.

Overall, that kind of sums up the job specs...

Two kids about to enter nursery school and presumably wife dont work. That might not be able to sustain a good living in HK. If you are directly responsible for revenue generation then the bonus should be lot higher. But for someone with 6 years experience working in mfg sector, i would say the package is pretty good if you dont generate sales.

Thanks, wife don't work. Bonus is typically 3~4 months, 1 month is fixed for 13th month, balance 2~3 months is based on the financial performance, i.e. if sales target was reached or was there a growth in sales with reference to a nominal sales figure. But I do generate sales, expected to bring in new customer(s).
