Hi gameover, the salary for doctor (medical doc) is very depends on the specialty that you have, e.g. O&G is definitetly best making money specialty, also anaesthetist (Fellowship qualified) is currently a good pay specialty since many of the OTs are lack of supply, if you are hard working you may make up to around 200K/month (excl insurance). If you are GP, you may try OPD clinic or private one, may make up to 50K-90K/month, very depends on your patient relationship and contract terms. Some experienced expat docs are not practice clinically in HK but they teach med students in the university academically.

    hey gameover!

how come there are so few replies here???? its time for me to write something, cos i am currently working as a doctor in HK, hope i can provide u with some insights to the industry.

a breif description of myself. i was born in HK, my family moved to the UK when i was 8 and they came back a couple of years ago. I decided to come back for medsch at the age of 18 simply because HK doctors were paid alot more than UK doctors at that time(after tax and living expense adjusted), which is still true now.

so where are u from and what qualifications so u have? cos whether u will be able to succeed here depends very much on your background, skills and qualifcations.

but in general, the working hour is really really bad for doctors here and its way beyound what u can imagin. say if ur a surgeon, u may have to be on call for 6-8 times a month, and u dun leave the hospital until the following day ends,if ur lucky u get half day off, but be prepared to work for at least 30 hours straight.

ok now u may think its ok to work your ass off, but whether u will be happy thats another issue. bear in mind that there are very few expats doctos in HK, unlike the finance industry, the chance of getting someone to drink with u in LKF is as slim as hitting the lottery. most doctors grew up here and they spend most of their time studying, impressing their boss. they have no social skills and have no idea how to talk to foreigners, so ur considered very lucky if your coworker starts chatting to u in english. if it happens to u, its likely that the doctor has a similar background to me!

finally whether u can make $$$ in HK does not depend on your knowledge, it depends how well u can keep your local customers happy, such as giving antibiotics to a case of flu.

i am not exaggerting, i am giving very honest opinions here. i hope i can help, and if u ever happen to work here, please let me know, we can hang out!

    good luck!!!!

Personally I wouldn't want to use a doctor whose English was as poor as yours.

So only good doctors speak and write English?
You need to have a proctologist look at your vocal cords.

From someone whom I take to be a native English speaker ("I'm from London"), then yes that quality of English makes me uncomfortable about their capabilities as a doctor.

    hey success999

u will definitely stand a high chance of getting into one of the training programmes, u will most likely end up in a surgical programme in a teaching hospital which requires u to speak very litte or no cantonese. There are many openings this year, many places are still unfilled.

that sounds encouraging, doesnt it??? but think again, applying the supply and demand law in economics, why are there so many openings? simply because theres no demand. why is there no demand?? i think i've already answered most parts of the question in my last entry. our NHS is no better than yours, if not worse. the private market is booming outthere which has driven many doctors away from the public sector. if specialist training is your priority, you dun mind working hard, living abroad and having no life at all, its a heaven for u. you will have to put in alot effort to prepare for the licensing exams etc, so make sure the return of this investment option outweighs the risk.

finally surely there are many options out there, ever thought about working in america???

    good luck!

    Hi Missy HK

Thanks for the posts they've been really informative. I trained and worked in the UK for the last 3 years and now find myself in HK trying to pass the licensing exam, with a view to working here eventually!!

Got through the first part and now attempting the clinical exam, don't suppose you have any advice or know anyone who has taken it?? Could really do with some help!

Also surely as a doctor in training you don't make that much cos with 16% tax thats alot more than the UK!!

    Thanks for your help

    to missy Hk or efg1111

I am freshly graduated from medical school with a GP degree from Europe and plan to come to HK to start a new life.

Does anybody have some practical informations about
    the HK medical licensing examination?
According to my information the examination is quite hard, but I need to pass this examination next year(I spent my last saving to get this examination)

I am still looking for a trainingship or observeship in a Hk hospital.

Anybody knows the guidelines to pass this examination? is it similar to the USMLE or MRCP/MRCS?

    How is the clinical part?

    Best regards,
